Smartphone can take 50-megapixel photos

Chinese manufacturer Oppo is restarting the cameraphone megapixel war by delivering a new handset capable of taking 50-megapixel images.

The Oppo Find 7 has one of the best spec sheets we've ever seen for a smartphone, although there's sleight of hand going on to deliver those 50-megapixel images.

Unlike the Nokia Lumia 1020, Oppo isn't using an ultra-high resolution sensor. In fact, the Find 7's camera is only 13 megapixels.

To create the 50-megapixel images, it takes a burst of ten individual shots and then combines the four "best" shots to create a "superzoom" 50-megapixel image. The 8,160 x 6,120 image files come out at around 10MB each, according to Engadget.

The images aren't the only ultra-high resolution aspect of the Find 7. The 5.5in screen has a so-called Quad-HD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440, delivering a pixel density of 538ppi. By comparison, the iPhone 5s has a pixel density of 326ppi, although as our mobile expert Paul Ockenden has written many times, smartphone displays have long since passed the point of diminishing returns, with the naked eye unable to distinguish the difference in sharpness between displays past so-called "Retina" resolution.

The Find 7's other specs include a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage.

It will cost $US599 in the US. Australian pricing and availability is yet to be announced.
