Dell has launched a file-based encryption solution.
Using technology from Credant, it encrypted a drive at the file level, and had options available based on the end-user profile, data sensitivity and compliance needs.
Dell product manager Bob Bennett said it is a a multi-key solution with policy at different levels.
"You do not get in a sector-based environment as the encryption is at file-level" Bennett said adding that the company had recently added biometric and security solutions to its hardware.
“With an installed system there is a requirement to be compliant and reach requirements and keep out the headlines for wrong reasons.
“The initial transition to rollout encryption in an enterprise tends to be quite cumbersome as you have to do un-encryption, transportation and re-encryption and rollout and, that can take up to 24 hours.
Bennett said that the product will not encrypt an entire removable device but only the data on it, as the administrator can set a domain level and encrypt everything that attaches to it.
“You can control the data on a device and it also offers nine compliance settings that a controller can set up quickly. This should not interfere with how authentication options occur, but it gives the organisation through IT the ability to control data and choose encryption to give flexibility,” he said.
It did not yet work with smartphones or tablets.
