Senetas said it has identified Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) as a technology that requires encryption to maintain a level of data security.
CCTV surveillance is used in locations that require constant monitoring, including; airports, banks and military instillations.
John DuBois, CEO at Senetas said multiple CCTV cameras are being used to transmit images over networks to remote monitoring centres as part of remote video surveillance.
"With the advent of Gigabit Ethernet technology promising to change the way the industry uses networked cameras, CCTV now requires network encryption rather than IPSec internet links," he said.
"GigE vision - developed by a group of about 50 companies - [has become] the interface standard for networking industrial cameras across Ethernet and the industry needs to ensure data from intrusion or altercation as it's transmitted."
DuBois said the development of high definition networked CCTV cameras (which produce signals at resolutions of 1920x1080 pixels) provided a challenge in ensuring there was sufficient bandwidth to maintain the quality of the transmitted images.
"The nature of the surveillance requires transmitted images be sent with full confidentiality to prevent readily available copper or optical taps eavesdropping on sensitive information such as that from military bases or airports," he said.
"Encrypting transmitted video signal provides the necessary privacy protection, however the challenge lies in choosing an encryption solution that wont impact on network performance and still allow sufficient bandwidth to retain image quality."
