So Telstra has finally admitted that ADSL really operates at 8Mb/s and the only reason you were getting less was due to the company's legal wrangle with the ACCC to keep its broadband away from wholesalers.
Now the war of words is over, Telstra has emailed all its broadband users with offers of fourfold speed boosts for no more money.
Whether your contract will allow you to switch to a less money deal to maintain the speed you've already got is yet to be determined.
One of the industry players which might have given Telsra a nudge on the timing of their speed jump offers is BigAir which now claims it will be offering 1Gb/s via wireless, mostly in the big smoke, sometime in the New Year.
We can already hear the howls from the rural and regional internet mavens but after all, the capital cities are where most of us live.
Rabid would just like to be assured that a 1Gb/s wireless service won't also turn anything in its path into well-done toast.
