Yahoo adds Xoopit to webmail lineup

Yahoo continued its webmail remake Thursday by announcing the acquisition of photo management service Xoopit.

The company plans to bundle the photo service into its Yahoo Mail webmail offering. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Xoopit's software allows users to find and index images within email accounts. Yahoo hopes that the addition of Xoopit will allow users to have better management over large collections of photos from inboxes and saved message folders.

"With the integration of Xoopit’s platform technology and capabilities, the task of sending photos via email will be as easy as it should be and sharing photo albums with friends and family members will also be a cinch," wrote Yahoo senior vice president of applications Bryan Lamkin.

"You’ll be able to share your pictures among a group of friends or family like never before, combining pictures from numerous sources into a single album for a private group to view."

The move is the latest in what has been an ongoing effort by Yahoo to overhaul its mail service. Earlier this week the company explained that the campaign would look to make the webmail service more like popular social networking sites with features such as suggested connections and status updates.
