No job cuts are expected but the new organisation will cover over 800 research and development staff already in the continent and will aim to coordinate research better and work with other companies and the EU, particularly the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
“Structurally, ILE will serve as a coordination point for Intel’s new collaborative architecture research projects in Europe and is goaled with scaling research programs under a common management team and coordinating work with the European research community and policy makers,” said the company in a statement.
“The mission of ILE is to advance Intel Architecture research and innovation and to partner with European stakeholders to improve European competitiveness.”
The initial focus of research will be in the fields of visual computing, software development, enterprise solutions, green computing, advanced microprocessor research and high performance computing.
The new organisation will be headed up by Prof. Dr. Martin, currently the global director of IT Innovation at Intel and Professor of Technology and Business Innovation at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
Looking ahead the chip giant said it was considering starting two open labs in Munich, Germany and Leixlip, Ireland to host open innovation activities such as participation in EU Framework 7 (FP7) research activities, as well as working with SAP’s research team in Germany.
